Destination of the week: Meru and its neighborhood

270 km north-west from Nairobi, one can find a city that is a gate to attractions like Mount Kenya, Samburu National Reserve or Buffalo Springs National Reserves. That city is Meru. Located in a heart of Kenya, with its 250,000 residents, is very often omitted when it comes to domestic tourism.

Mombasa, Kisumu, Nairobi and the national parks. Everyone knows Kenya for those places, but where in this mass-tourism craziness is a space for small, lovely getaway spots? Very often underestimated, Meru is a real Kenyan jewel.

The city itself is home to the majestic Mount Kenya - the highest mount in Kenya and second highest on the African continent. Together with Mount Kenya National Park, the area was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Driving a little north, one can spend amazing time in a Samburu National Reserve watching wildlife and relaxing in one of the local hotels. Elephant Bedroom Samburu is a great place for those looking for a little bit o f luxury. Located in the reserve, along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, provides its guests with an unforgettable and unique experience. One can also try Samburu Sopa Lodge built atop of a high ground with a majestic view to the land and hills beyond. Both hotels can be booked, for instance, on Jovago.com.
